A packable build folds flat into its own pocket or a slim panel and opens square when it is needed. The compromise to watch is the base: a bag that folds completely flat usually has no stiffener, so the box inside it sits on a soft base and the whole thing sags. Ours use a removable or hinged base panel so it folds flat and still holds its shape loaded.

The other thing to specify is the fold itself. A bag folded and unfolded five days a week creases along the same lines several hundred times a year, and an unplanned fold cracks a coated shell exactly where it bends. We set the fold pattern and choose a shell rated for repeated flexing, which costs nothing and is the difference between one season and several.
